Two-Dimensional Horse
— A Joint Ink and Print Exhibition by Lin Jichang and He Fu
Dates: May 1, 2026 – May 31, 2026
Venue: Hall 2, V Exit Art Museum
“Two-Dimensional Horse” — what is it?
Answer: a useless thing.
Now, placing this exhibition within the setting of the “Micro Art Fair” is like the lords of the South Sea and the North Sea meeting in the realm of chaos, trying to attract passersby with sights, sounds, food, and rest. Yet my own paintings are large and useless, discarded by all. A master stonemason would not dare swing his axe, for fear of harming my nose; the wild dust of galloping horses would only stir up laughter. Therefore, I dare not present this “ugliness” directly to the world, but hide it behind digital prints, lowering myself to the level of a bargain bin — a strategy of dragging my tail in the mud.
How fortunate, then, that He Fu is here. He dwells somewhere between being a useful and a useless tree. Riding the flames of heroic song, wielding the winds and clouds of ink, he turns the rotten into the miraculous and fills his pockets with gold. His paintings are of use to the world and a delight to others — this is “useful.”
One is a scattered, knotty tree; the other, a straight-grained timber. One, with thin-blade subtlety, moves freely through the interstices; the other, by being useless, lives out its natural years. The two ride side by side, not to race, but to illuminate each other. His worldly, market-stall smoke and fire set off my desolate wilderness; and I, watching fish from the Hao Bridge, laugh at his momentary dream of a deer.
If you insist on seeing this exhibition as a bargain to be found, then look at this “two-dimensional” realm: the useful tree flaunts its colors; the useless one preserves its own life. You are not a fish — how do you know the fish’s joy? You are not me — how do you know that I do not know the fish’s joy?
Whether you come or not — the lord on the riverbank casts his line; only those willing are caught.
