
In 2004, he was awarded the "Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters" by the French government; in 2006, he received the "Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana" from the President of Italy; and in 2013, he was honored with the title of "Outstanding Educator in Beijing" by the Beijing Municipal Government. He has also received the "Annual Curator Award" (2010) and the "Annual Artistic Contribution Award" (2017) from the "China Art Power List."
He founded and curated major exhibitions such as the "Guangzhou Triennial," "Guangzhou International Photo Biennale," "CAFAM Biennale," "CAFAM Future Exhibition," "Beijing International Photo Biennale," and the "Pan-Southeast Asia Biennale."
He has held solo art exhibitions at public institutions in Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, as well as in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Guilin, Kunming, Guiyang, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, among other places.
His works are collected by institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum (UK), the British Museum (UK), the Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford (UK), the Uffizi Galleries (Italy), the Museo di Palazzo Te (Italy), the Hoffmann Collection (Germany), the Bonn Museum of Modern Art (Germany), the German-Chinese Cultural Exchange Foundation, the National Art Museum of China, the Art Museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Museum of Nanjing University of the Arts, the Guangdong Museum of Art, the Zhejiang Art Museum, the Hubei Museum of Art, the Anhui Provincial Museum, the Suzhou Museum, and the Long Museum Shanghai.
His publications include The Museum as Knowledge Production, New Museums: Strategies, Concepts, and Practices, and Travels and Poetry, among other monographs.
