Breaking Ground: An Ecological Manifesto of "Symbiosis Between Trees and Grasses"
By Lin Zhu
This is not merely an art fair in the traditional sense, but a practical experiment that builds the urban art ecosystem with an ecological mindset. Using the metaphor of symbiosis between "tall trees" and "small grasses", we attempt to answer a fundamental question: What kind of climate and nutrients does the sound growth of the contemporary art ecosystem truly require?
We often talk about the inadequacies of Qingdao’s art ecosystem, including the disconnect between exhibitions, transactions, public aesthetics, and collector resources. In fact, this problem is not unique to Qingdao; most other second and third-tier cities face the same challenge. The vertically stratified exhibition mechanism tends to concentrate discourse power in the hands of established artists and institutions. Exorbitant social costs create a double barrier for display, communication, and market guidance, forcing most independent creators to remain obscure for a long time or confine themselves to self-indulgent exchanges within small circles of acquaintances. The "Mini Art Fair" is precisely a complementary experiment born out of reflection on this ecological phenomenon.
With a "zero-threshold" curatorial philosophy, this year’s fair breaks the shackles: it eliminates screening criteria based on age, academic background, and professional experience, taking originality as the sole benchmark. It allows established artists to stand alongside emerging talents, and creators to communicate on an equal footing with art enthusiasts, enabling the untamed vitality of artistic creation to break through the existing value evaluation system. This deliberately constructed "disorder" is a sincere tribute to the democratization of art. Through subsequent workshops and creation support programs, we hope that the Mini Art Fair will not be a final destination for display, but a starting point for nurturing new artistic stars.
"Symbiosis Between Trees and Grasses" refuses to be a closed system of self-amusement. Through in-depth collaboration with the Qingdao International Art Annual Exhibition, participating artists will have the opportunity to access broader platforms for display and exchange. Meanwhile, the positioning of small-sized works and affordable prices will break down the barrier between creation and collection, bringing art into public view and daily life, and forming a mutually nurturing ecological cycle. We aim to explore a sustainable model for the art ecosystem amid pluralistic symbiosis.
The true prosperity of an art ecosystem does not lie in how many towering trees it nurtures, but in allowing every plant to find room to breathe freely. The wisdom of symbiosis between trees and grasses may well be the key to art’s return to the essence of life.
