Chen Yangbiao

Born in 1978 in Chenghai, Guangdong. He is a member of Shantou Photographers Association and Guangdong Photographers Association.

Photographic Work: Poetry & Distance (1)

Those unfulfilled dreams are never regrets of life, but another form of its blooming. All possibilities lie dormant here, just like seeds falling into fertile soil, allowing everything possible to take root and grow.

Cheng Yu

Chen Huiting, stage name Chengyu, was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, China and currently resides in Taipei. She is a National First-Class Artist, a graduate of the Advanced Figure Painting Research Program at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and the Fashion Art Program at Chinese Culture University, as well as the founder of the Traceability Culture and Art Research Association.

The Course of Life
Photography, Collage on Canvas
70×40 cm

The entire work explores the tension and balance of life between nature and artifice, organic and geometric forms, chaos and order, through the natural texture of tree bark combined with abstract geometric symbols. This collage technique elevates ordinary tree bark into an artistic language rich in philosophical connotations, prompting viewers to engage in profound reflection on the essence of life and modes of existence.

Rationality leads to disenchantment, yet the world remains mysterious and requires art to re-enchant it. Only through re-enchantment can we resist the homogenizing violence exerted by modern technology on the world, on individual human beings, and on ordinary things. My paintings re-enchant the world by creating a mysterious realm, where the protagonists are the philosophical sages who inquire into the mysteries of the world.

And the Wind Finally Passes Through
Acrylic, Pastel, Partial Oil Painting
 77×140 cm

And the Entanglement Finally Solidified
A frozen sound of waves shatters like glazed crystal

It is the crystal forged by impermanence in quenching fire,
A prism polished by self-reflection in the twists of fate.

And the Chaos Finally Takes Shape

A manifested structure burns like a blues melody
It is the atomic metamorphosis in topology,
Phosphorescent powder soaring with the light beyond the cave.

And the Search Finally Lands

An echoing descent lingers like fireworks in the sky
It is a verse breathed through by the wind,
A rebirth rising from half a grain of ash.

Future Has Arrived Series No.3 · Battlefield Beneath the Trap of Blossoms
180×388 cm, Ink and Color on Paper

Giant colorful flowers hang overhead like bombs, like planets...
Gray ink splatters across the chaotic battlefield, as an old farmer swings his hoe toward the flower formation. The final chapter of the straw hat era.

Against the backdrop of consumerism-dominated society today, the "urban expressions" captured by the lens are intended to move beyond the sole focus on economic interests and material consumption. They seek to arouse people's attention to citizens' spiritual needs, cultural pursuits and social values, and use authentic humanistic moments to interpret the ideal form of a city that boasts not only developmental vitality, but also warmth and affection.

The Story of Oracle Bone Inscriptions II
Ink on Paper,
138×35 cm

The beauty of oracle bone inscriptions lies in their standing at the intersection of writing and painting, religion and art, chaos and order. Every stroke carved on them is the original code of aesthetics. I admire the forms and strokes of oracle bone inscriptions not to research and understand their meanings like paleographers do. Some characters have lost their original meanings after thousands of years of evolution. Moreover, people from different eras will inject distinct images and vibes into them when writing. When I appreciate and copy them, it is a process of communicating and conversing with them.

Beyond the Hustle and Bustle
AI Image Work, Still Frame

Most of my works focus on the people and events around me, the predicaments and resilience of individual lives, and how people can still maintain their dignity and hope under the weight of the world. Those individuals who "roll the stone up the mountain"—who resist despite knowing that suffering has no solution—embody the most stirring aesthetics of life.

I have been trying to present abstract figures and concrete realities in a contradictory picture. In fact, I have always wanted to create interesting images by testing and distinguishing colors. The relationship between light and color in Impressionism is intended to emphasize the changes in color under the influence of light, while I want to show that light and color can be separated and exist independently—colors that are solitary without the sense of light.

Some squares inscribed with mathematical formulas symbolize the mathematical origins of all things. Scattered irregular geometric color blocks represent the emergence of physical forms and emotions. On the top layer lie some slightly cartoonish light-colored shapes, implying that the world is taking shape from the realm of geometry and mathematics, yet remains suspended in a state of becoming—where infinite possibilities of all things reside.

No. 1 of the Photography Series The Renaissance of Daobaodao
April 3, 2025

As once the commercial center of Qingdao, the renovation of "Daobaodao" began more than a decade ago. However, the efforts have been intensified in recent years with clearer goals, hence stirring up quite a strong response. As a major event taking place right around me, it is only natural for me, a documentary photography enthusiast who has always taken pride in recording stories happening around me, to focus on the changes of "Daobaodao" with my camera. During this process, the various reactions and multi-dimensional expectations of people around toward the renovation of "Daobaodao" have influenced my mood and shooting, prompting me to integrate recording and expression into one. Thus these photos came into being.

The softness of that downward glance prevails,

He is currently the Vice Dean and Professor of the School of Experimental Art, Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts. Having studied in France in his early years, his artistic practice covers ink painting, photography, installation art and other fields, and he is committed to integrating traditional media with contemporary artistic languages.

Stone-Setting,
Performance Video

Wang Aijun’s performance Stone-Setting in the Gobi Desert of Xinjiang can be regarded as a contemporary land ritual imbued with Eastern philosophy. Confronting the natural limits with her own body, the artist erected the "lying flat" stones one by one. This act transcends mere physical labor and becomes a philosophical inquiry into the essence of existence.

Wang Chuanhe

Wang Chuanhe is a contemporary Chinese abstract oil painter whose artistic creation centers on the ocean theme. His style has evolved through the stages of realism, impressionism, imagery and abstraction. The unique abstract language he developed in 2014, demonstrated in his series such as Zen Wisdom, embodies the creative philosophy of "revealing the Dao through water", integrating the dynamic nature of water with the dialectical thinking in traditional culture.

Xinyuan Series,
60 cm × 80 cm

For this piece, I employed dense brushstrokes with the subtle rhythm of water ripples hidden within. The interweaving of colors and concealed shapes resembles the traces of accumulated breaths—like a slow dialogue between the soul and nature. I aimed to create a profound yet fluid atmosphere of hidden messages, allowing viewers to perceive the accumulation of time and the rhythm of life as they gaze upon it.

Egret,Woodblock Print with Color

I strive to juxtapose the two modes of carving and brush painting in the same picture, forming an integrated "half-carved, half-painted" approach.
On the one hand, I maximize the advantages and characteristics of each of these two artistic forms to bring them into full play and display. On the other hand, through my artistic practice, I have come to realize that when two different artistic modes are placed side by side, viewers will jump and switch between different artistic language systems instead of anchoring themselves in a single unified framework. This creates a real-yet-illusory visual and psychological experience.

I strive to present each piece of work as a unique creation, rather than repeating myself. That’s why I like to destroy the objects in my hands—tearing, twisting, burning them—and then reassemble the fragments to form a brand-new composition. The reconstructed image becomes a new time-space dimension, a multi-dimensional world.

Pencil and Fixative on Paper
2024

Here, the character "Dao" carries two meanings. One is its inherent philosophical connotation, which would require an elaborate exposition and thus will not be expanded on here. The other refers to the pencil strokes.
All the works are created with pencils. They primarily feature square shapes, yet these shapes are neither cubes, boxes, nor containers of any sort. Instead, they are intended to reflect a kind of rational thinking, while also depicting light and shadow on a flat surface.

I pour construction materials such as cement, gypsum or mortar into the collected waste, from which a completely new shape is born.
This is different from the "reproduction" from molds. It represents the transformation of discarded, trace-bearing objects from daily life into the industrial, cold and hard entities that we use to build our cities. The resulting forms are much like fossils.

Appearance Proceeds from the Heart,Photographic Work

I try to take the opportunity of photographing women to observe their intentions before shooting, their performance during shooting, their style preferences, as well as their photo - choosing inclinations after shooting, along with their personality traits, mood states and desire to express themselves. At this moment, photography becomes a way for the subjects to express themselves and vent their emotions in the contemporary context. It is not restricted by traditions or mainstream norms. Instead, it adopts personalized ways of expression and differentiated presentations, making use of the subjects' unique behaviors, body language and facial expressions to turn the photos into a reflection of their inner worlds.

Paradise Lost,Handmade Silver Gelatin Print

Our bodies may be undergoing distortion, yet distortion is also the prelude to transformation. In this Paradise Lost, there is no turning back; only by traversing the desert of alienation can we possibly arrive at a new perception of the body. I photograph these distorted figures, as if seeing myself in a mirror—a modern soul struggling to survive in the tide of materialization, waiting for some kind of transcendence with both despair and hope.

Even the wisest person is confined to their own information cocoon. While bearing the weight of the crown, they also drift further and further away from the wings of angels.

The imagery refracted by metallic objects comes from distant legends
Photographic Work

Since 2024, while continuing the years-long practice of documentary photography focusing on humanistic and folk culture themes, I have shifted more of my focus to wandering through streets and alleys to capture ordinary people’s stories candidly. Even in stolen moments of leisure, I never fail to notice the various imagery presented by peeling wall paint, stains at the base of walls, textures on tree barks, as well as metallic objects, sponges, lacquerware, water stains and so on. These observations always bring unexpected surprises and ignite creative inspiration. The decades of cultural accumulation I have amassed throughout my life have not been in vain—from observation to contemplation, it is not until I press the shutter that a series of imagery photography works take shape officially.

Landscape Transformed - Bamboo Grove
100 cm × 80 cm
September 2020

Since 2014, I have been creating the Chinese Imagery Landscape Series. It was not until 2020 that the experience of the pandemic plunged me into anxiety and fear for a time. Children were confined at home, unable to connect with nature or interact with people in society; adults also worked from home. Everyone was trapped in a narrow and cramped space... I then began to heal myself, turning my spiritual focus toward emptiness and nurturing a yearning for the natural environment.

Qilin No.23
Bronze
87.5 cm
2025

This year, I have explored a new material—archaized bronze ware. In ancient times, it embodied both divinity and solemnity, and it is also the root of traditional culture. By decomposing and reconstructing these sacred and ritual vessels, a bizarre scene that is both familiar and unfamiliar emerges... This scene is precisely a reflection of the chaotic state of the present day!

One of The Cracks of Time Series
Oil on Canvas,
2025, 70×90CM

The Cracks of Time oil painting series takes daily life as its core, which is also an extension of my creative habit of "oil painting diary". Driven by emotional needs, I adopt a simple approach to explore the transcendence and emotional resonance hidden in trivial daily moments, ordinary chores, and the very essence of life.
If the passage of time is an unchangeable norm, then records need a tangible carrier. This series will continue to evolve this year, as I strive to express the various states of life in my own unique way.
